Japan is represented in the United States by its embassy in Washington, D.C., 14 Consulates-General and three Consular Offices. Each office serves a fixed group of states, and visa applicants as well as Japanese citizens have to use the one responsible for their home address, not the one closest to their travel plans.
Japanese Consulates by City
The consular districts follow the official map of the Embassy of Japan. Some borders run through a state: Fairfield County in Connecticut belongs to New York, the rest of the state to Boston; Idaho is split between Seattle and Portland, and California between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
